I figured I would post this now and make it a sticky so it would be here because this question comes up all the time on other forums. The fact is no loose substrates are safe for leos. Calci sand is by far the worst but other loose susbstrates are dangerous for leos to because they tend to eat there substrate and are more prone to impaction. The best and safest substrates for leos are paper towels, newspaper, reptile carpet, tiles,or slate rock. Before anybody writes back and says that they want the most natural thing and says thats sand well its not. Leos live in more rocky areas and the most natural is slate rocks and they are safe for leos. I know there are still people out there that still use calci sand and other loose substrates but the fact is its not safe and why people would risk there leos life over it when they know its dangerous is beyond me.

I use Eco Earth for one of my adults. I also use repti carpet, and these bamboo mats I have. The only difference with my leo is that I let the stuff dry before I put it in. I agree that calci sand is horrible though. And my babies are on carpet. To me tile looks the best but takes the most time to create a nice looking enclosure.

Oh, and tile rocks! The crickets can't sneak under it!
